3 Axis Accelerometer: Simultaneous Triaxial Monitoring

3 axis accelerometer

Structural health monitoring often misses subtle shifts. A 3 axis accelerometer runs into the same issue if you only watch one direction — vertical vibration might look fine while lateral sway goes unnoticed. Measuring all three axes at once changes that. Instead of three separate sensors and tricky alignment, a single triaxial unit streams X, Y, and Z data in sync. Kingmach provides these instruments for long-term geotechnical and structural projects, with options that fit different frequency ranges and output types. The engineering team can also adjust housings and cable lengths to match site conditions, which helps when you’re installing on a bridge pier one month and inside a tunnel the next.

Technical Detail

Configured around process stability, mold life, and long-term uptime.

The Kingmach 3 axis accelerometer lineup covers vibration and tilt monitoring for dams, tunnels, building foundations, and slopes. Typical sensor elements are MEMS or force-balance, with measurement ranges from ±2g up to ±10g, bandwidths from DC to several hundred Hertz. Many units output voltage or digital RS-485, and a few support IEPE for direct connection to data loggers. Stainless steel housings with IP67 or IP68 ratings are standard, but the team can specify higher ingress protection or different mounting options if needed. Kingmach manufactures geotechnical instruments in-house, so lead times for non-standard configurations stay short compared to OEM suppliers. Clients often ask for extended low-frequency response (below 0.1 Hz) to capture slow deformations, or integrated temperature sensors and calibration reports. These are handled as engineering requests rather than off-the-shelf restrictions. All accelerometers go through a full-range calibration before shipping, and the after-sales group provides installation guidance and data analysis support, especially for first-time users integrating accelerometers into SCADA or automated monitoring systems.

FAQ

Common technical questions

How does a 3 axis accelerometer differ from three single-axis units?

The main advantage is phase coherence. With three separate sensors, time alignment between channels can drift, especially in long-term monitoring. A true triaxial unit samples all axes simultaneously from the same sensing element, so lateral and vertical vibrations stay locked in time. It also simplifies mounting and cable management.

Can I use this accelerometer for both static inclination and dynamic vibration?

It depends on the sensor technology. MEMS-based 3 axis accelerometers can measure both static tilt (DC response) and low-frequency vibration. Piezoelectric or IEPE types have no DC response, so they only capture dynamic events above a few hertz. Kingmach can help select the right variant for your project.

What output signals are available, and how do I connect to a data logger?

Common outputs include analog voltage (±5V, 0–10V), current loop (4–20mA), and digital RS-485 with Modbus protocol. We can also supply IEPE-compatible units with a constant current source. Connection details depend on your logger’s input channels; we typically provide wiring diagrams and calibration coefficients.

How do you mount a 3 axis accelerometer on concrete or steel surfaces?

Most applications use bolted mounting with a stud or a magnetic base, as this gives the best high-frequency coupling. For long-term installations, we can provide mounting bases with grouting or epoxy. Alignment is important — the sensor’s X and Y axes should line up with the structural directions you’re monitoring. We can also supply custom brackets if the surface is curved or irregular.

What kind of customization is possible for large projects?

We regularly adjust cable lengths, connector types, and housing materials. We can also modify the measuring range, build in temperature compensation, or provide sensors with lower noise floors for micro-g applications. For OEM or bulk orders, we’re open to branding and packaging changes as well.
